Three year old hands doing Montessori practical life pouring activity

20 Montessori Activities for 3-Year-Olds at Home

Three is the age where “I do it myself” becomes the loudest sentence in your house.

Montessori works well here because it takes that instinct seriously. A three-year-old can genuinely wash a dish, pour their own water, and cut a banana. They just need the right size tools and permission to be slow about it.

Here are 20 activities that worked for us. ðŸĶĒ

Practical Life

1. Pouring Water From a Small Pitcher

A real glass pitcher, filled a third of the way. Spills are part of the activity — hand them a cloth and let them handle it.

2. Cutting a Banana With a Child-Safe Knife

A wavy crinkle cutter or a butter knife works. Bananas first, then cucumber, then softer vegetables.

3. Washing Dishes on a Stool

One plate, warm water, a small brush. It takes twenty minutes and floods the counter, and they’ll ask to do it again tomorrow.

4. Watering Plants With a Small Can

Assign them one specific plant. Ownership matters more than technique.

5. Sorting and Matching Socks

Real laundry, real contribution. Also excellent early pattern recognition.

6. Setting the Table

Start with napkins and spoons. A placemat with outlines drawn on it makes it self-correcting.

7. Buttoning and Zipping Practice

An old shirt on a hanger, or a dressing frame. Practice when nobody’s in a hurry, not on the way out the door.

Sensory and Science

8. Sink or Float Experiment

A bowl of water and eight household objects. Ask them to guess first, then test.

9. Planting Seeds in a Cup

Beans sprout fast enough to hold a three-year-old’s attention. Keep it on a windowsill they can see.

10. Color Mixing With Water and Droppers

Three cups of colored water, one empty, one dropper. Genuine discovery, plus fine motor work.

11. Nature Scavenger Hunt With a Picture List

Five pictures: leaf, stone, stick, flower, something round. Works in a park or a backyard.

12. Texture Matching Bag

Pairs of objects with distinct textures. They reach in and find the match by feel alone.

20. Naming and Describing a Mystery Object

One object hidden in a cloth bag. They feel it and describe it before pulling it out.

How to Set These Up So They Get Used

Put out three or four at a time on a low shelf, each on its own tray. Rotate weekly. A shelf with twelve activities gets ignored; a shelf with four gets used.

Final Thoughts

The point isn’t the activity. It’s that your three-year-old gets to do something real, at their own pace, without being rescued.

Pick three from this list for this week. Save the post for when those get stale. ðŸĶĒ
